Murtha: Western Pennsylvania is “redneck”

Last week he said we were racists. This week, we’re rednecks:

U.S. Rep. John Murtha is calling many of the people who put him in office “rednecks.”

The news comes one week after Murtha claimed the area is racist, then apologized for that comment.

In explaining his comments about racism, Murtha, D-Johnstown, told WTAE Channel 4 Action News on Monday it’s difficult for many in the area to change. Murtha said that just five to 10 years ago the entire area was “redneck.”

If he dislikes his constituents so much, I suggest that he find someone else to represent.

The facts are the facts. Rural Pennsylvania is filled with ignorant racists. Sorry you can’t handle the real world.

Actually, Murtha’s district is Mennonite country. Personally, I think they’re charming. Mennonites are pacifists, and they were the first to protest slavery in America. It would be very hard to call them racists or rednecks.

But never mind that. Even if they are as bad as you say, is it smart politics for Murtha to insult his constituents?

Johnstown is not Mennonite, it’s just your right-wing pseudo-Christian fantasy in which you delude yourself with persecution fantasies. Ever been to Johnstown? I didn’t think so.

  4. K. Crary says:

“Persecution fantasies”? What are you talking about?

I suppose you have a point. Murtha’s district is one of those modern atrocities drawn for political purposes and defies easy generalization. Best just to say that it includes Mennonite country. On the other hand, maybe rural Pennsylvania also defies easy generalization.
